Plant-based is the future

About Veganism
The vegan society
What is Veganism?
"Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." - The Vegan Society

Having a plant-based diet and being a Vegan are two different things. A Vegan is somebody who does not partake in or support any form of exploitation to non-human animals. By definition a Vegan follows a plant-based diet, but veganism itself is a lifestyle.

The Dairy Industry
The Egg Industry
Milk is the mammary secretion of a mammal which is produced once the animal gives birth to their young. Humans are mammals, human breast milk is an ideal food for human babies. Cows are also mammals, and cow breast milk is ideal for cow babies. Humans, however, artificially inseminate female cows, so as she will lactate, This process is done over and over until the cow is 'spent' and killed. Female calves will be raised to repeat this cycle. Male calves will be killed shortly after birth and sold as veal for human consumption.
Whether free range or factory farmed, male chicks are of not deemed useful as they don't produce eggs and aren't suitable for meat. They are killed almost immediately after hatching either by being thrown into an industrial grinder (‘macerator’) or gassed to death. Both of which are considered "humane" by EU legislation.
As well as this, hens are subject to a confined and restricted environment. Even if free-range which legally allows 9 hens per meter squared... not exactly the green fields you imagined.
